Been thinking about this word today, that one of the character in Supplement used often.

Enjoy~

He often said that when hes leaving, and he said tt to his subordinates when they have work to do too. Was wondering, can one really enjoy everything in life, even if its things he dont like? Can we change ourselves, our perception, to enjoy the things we do? Instead of just changing the things to things we like?

How many of us are able to make the best out of every situation, and always look on the bright side?

Can we really eNjOy every single moment of life?

Expectation can turn things sour, it can affect your perception, and in turn affects a lot of things. I suppose I agree with my friend when he said expectation changes things. And its ironic, though realistic, that many of us tend to treat strangers better than people close to us.

You expect a lot more from a close one, and very often, when he or she doesnt do things the way you expect, you are unhappy, and things start to escalate if theres no communication. You are unhappy with him, he doesnt know why u are unhappy about, and he thinks its ridiculous you dont tell him and yet expect him to know. And hes unhappy with you. And you are even more unhappy cos u think hes in the wrong, and now it becomes your fault. And things go on.

Expectation causes disappointment. We should all learn to control our expectation, because things dont always go the way we expect. And when we are disappointed, we should realise that its our mind that are changing things, not others. Only your perception is changed, facts dont.

If you can do that, tell me how.

Resignation from Adulthood

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult.

I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of a 5 year old again.

I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four star restaurant.

I want to think M&M are better than money because you can eat them.

I want to believe that chocolate, fries and ice cream aren't fattening.

I want to think a 50 cents coin is worth more than two dollar note cause it weighs more.

I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes. When all I knew was to be happy because I was blissfully unaware of all the things that should make me worried.

I want to think the world is fair.

I want to think that everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible.

I want to be overly excited by the little things again, and able to laugh myself silly by the slightest things.

I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, dreams, the imagination, and Santa.

I want to think all good guys will live, and all bad guys will have a bad ending.

I want to believe in fairy tales.

I want to be happy everyday.
Saw this previous post from 3 years back.. an article from the straits times..

AS WE enter the Year of the Monkey, we are inundated with upbeat views about the stock market and the economy, not only from economists, but also from geomancers.

Coupled with the new resolutions we made for 2004 not too long ago, the general mood is one brimming over with optimism for a better year ahead and for greater opportunities to make more money.

What are you looking forward to in this new year and what new promises did you make yourself? Did you promise yourself a new car; to beat the market; to climb the corporate ladder; to make more money?

Or did you resolve to spend more time with your family and friends; to get home early enough at least three times a week to read a bedtime story to your kids; to do your bit to save the rainforest?

We make resolutions in a bid to improve our lives in the hope of increasing our happiness. So a very important question would be 'what makes you happy?'. What do you need to succeed in to make you happy?

In our society, many people mistakenly measure their success in terms of Mercedes and money, not enjoyment and relationships.

Does more money mean more happiness? Every week, scores of people bet some of their hard-earned money on the lottery in the hope of winning millions of dollars for a 'better life'. Would an extra million dollars make us happier?

True, more money may mean more holidays, a better car or designer-label clothes but where does this stop?

Studies of lottery winners showed that most were divorced, unhappy and often bankrupt within 10 years of their big win!

In fact, according to a US study, there is no correlation between income and happiness. The diagram above shows that even though personal income had doubled in real terms over 30 years, the level of happiness had remained relatively unchanged.

Tom Morris, a professor of philosophy and founder of the Morris Institute for Human Values, applied the insights of the great philosophers - such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle - to today's world.

One thing that has remained constant over the ages is man's pursuit of money, fame, power and status, which are society's hallmarks of success.

Morris said: 'I have no problems with money, power, fame or status - as long as they are treated as resources, rather than goals in themselves... Everyone I know who has a little wants more. But everyone I know who has a lot also wants more.'

A case in point is the following quote about Jim Clark, founder of Netscape and other computer companies:

'Before Silicon Graphics, Clark said a fortune of $10 million would make him happy; before Netscape, $100 million; before Healtheon, a billion; now, he says, 'Once I have more money than Larry Ellison, I'll be satisfied'.'

Ellison, the founder of the software company Oracle, is worth US$13 billion (S$22 billion).

Clark thought a fortune of US$10 million would make him happy, then US$100 million, now he won't be happy until he has US$13 billion.

So how much is enough?

People who know the answer are those who treat money or power as being of instrumental value. That is, these things are means rather than an end.

For instance, if their goals are to be able to maintain a comfortable lifestyle in retirement and take a long holiday every two years, they would work towards accumulating enough wealth to achieve that.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said: 'To laugh often and love much - to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived - this is to have succeeded.'

We need to realise that success is not about what we have but who we are. It should not be linked to the size of our bank accounts and number of cars in our garage, but rather to personal excellence and fulfilment.

Money can provide basic necessities, but it cannot buy you self-esteem, love or happiness.

Let me tell you a story about one of our clients. This man was a very successful entrepreneur who was very wealthy and very focused on making even more money. However, when I met him, he was very unhappy. He worked all the time, was in the process of getting divorced and had almost no relationship with his children.

I began working on his financial plan and got him organised and in control of his finances. Now he felt that he had enough money. He had made it.

What this insight allowed him to do was work on a relationship with his new wife, enjoy his new cottage and travelling, and build a legacy with his children by helping orphans around the world.

He understood what Ben Franklin said 200 years ago: 'Who is rich? Someone who realises that he has enough.'

My resolution this year is to focus more on meaningful relationships; to keep communication channels with my friends open and flowing, if not by meeting in person, then at least through a regular letter like this one.

I will end with a quote from Lao Tzu, from the book Tao Te Ching:

Chase after money and security

And your heart will never unclench.

Care about other people's approval

And you will be their prisoner.

Do your work, then step back.

The only path to serenity.

Best wishes to you and your family in the year ahead!

Had a movie marathon last wkend, watched Silent Hill, Click, and Wedding Crashers. All films are nice,I but I like click exceptionally, because it protrays a particular aspects of life.

In the movie, Adam Sandler obtained a universal remote control that controls the universe. You can pause, lower the volume or fast forward any part of your life. And Adam started fast forwarding the things he didnt like or find a chore in life, eg. quarreling with his wife, being sick, or waiting to be promoted. And one thing is, the remote remember those actions, and will fast forward automatically in the future, thus Adam started to miss a lot of his life, and at the end of the day, he regretted missing all those parts.

Doesnt this sound familiar? We put priorities on certain things, certain people, and we neglect the rest. At the end of the day, we dont realise what really matters to us, until we start to lose them, and by then it would have been too late. We cant go back in time and correct our decisions.

Or sometimes we do things without thinking of the consequences, and only regret them when the damage is done.

Not sure what else to write -_-...

Writer's block.. the writer is staring at something he really regreted..

I dont like people to fly planes. And I just dont understand why people do. And somehow, it get more and more prevalent as we get older. Why do people learn to think that it is alright to do so? Why is there a lack of commitment to keep to one's promise? Is it really that hard? Or is it because since others do so, then its alright for me to do so, since Im not the only one?

Sigh..

Been coughing quite badly all week long, thought I would get better, but then it sort of affected my breathing, so finally went to see the doc yesterday to get some medicine. Hopefully it will get better now.

Was chided by my fren for eating chicken cutlet yesterday, and today again for the chicken katsu. But she didnt understand. I knew it might be bad for my throat. But still, there were times when I really didnt feel like bothering about anything. Times when I would just do what I wanted to do. And yesterday was one of those times. It didnt matter if my cough get worse, I didnt really care.

But anyway, it doesnt matter.

Several things I miss doing ~~

Iceskating. I like iceskating, more than blading. Just prefer to stay cool haha.. and theres lots of things that u can do on the ice, though I still yet to learn that. I started skating the year after I left Jc, after i managed to get a fren to accompany me there. And I took 2-3 lessons before I learn how to skate without falling. Slow learner huh.. But I like it. Always gonna ask her to go skating with me when shes back in Spore. I miss iceskating..

Union. A lot of work. A lot of meetings. But.. with a lot of people together, its fun. Its tough, but its fun when many ppl worked together to put out something. But, that has already ended.

Volleyball. I joined volleyball only in my jc times, and its because my friends are all joining, thats how I ended up in there. But I never regretted that choice, one of the best decision I made in jc, because I like volleyball so much now, even though the training at those times are tough.

Sea watching. Used to do that a lot last time. But those were the times.

Airport. I dunno why, but I like to be at the airport, even if I do not have any purpose to be there. The only deterent is its so far away!!
I suppose I should brighten up my blog.. too many sad post liao, tt made me depressed even when Im typing them..
I always feel bleaked about my future. Not my career, not my life, but the people I know in my life, because people comes and go in my life, and sometimes, I just not in control of who comes in, and who goes out. I feel insecure about this. Especially when you feel people important to you are going to leave your life, and not be a part of your future. When you can see an end, when you can feel the end is near, its a sad feeling. And you cant prevent it.

I was back at jj last weekend, for the jj love fiesta, an annual carnival that involves students setting up stores and selling things, or running game stores. And there are really a lot of changes there. Flying fox occupies the area that was once the container classroom where my classes are held. Even the field are changed to plastic grass. Students only having to wear the full uniform on monday.. there are even bermudas now.. The changes there, its just amazing..

Met up with my tutors too.. Mdm Lim still remember me!!! its amazing.. she can remember my name, considering that I was a quiet student who dont warrant much attention for teachers. Touched.. Then my econs lecturer was relating about the changes to the school.. And theres this funny incident, my frens and I was at the shop, theres a student tending the shop.. and when she helped us to check out the stocks, she just left us there in the shop.. best.. she even leave her money on the table.. v trusting haa.. And ya.. Mr lim is now in pjc.. and Ms Lai told us he still cycles to school.. WOW>.....

Was travelling around the school.. the benches where we used to gather at in the morning.. the area behind the gym where we have our pe sometimes.. the squash court area where i used to do my pushups cos of playing vball in uniform.. the rooms that i studied in.. The infrastructure may have change a little here and there.. but the memories are still the same.. JC life for me is unforgettable, because so many things happened in the short 2 years there.

JJ spirit fills the air.. and lightens our heart..

Extract from an email.

I hope those of you who didnt reply, especially for the seniors, please make some effort to reply. For some of us like me, we are in the final sem of our undergrad year, and will be leaving school come April/May. Thus, after which, i suppose there are less chances for us to meet up, except maybe for some ocassions.

So guys n gers.. especially those graduating, please value your time here in ntu. Count the odds.
How often will we get to see each other in the future like we do now?
Do you want the last few months to just pass by.. and in future, be hi-bye friends?
Are each of us just a small character in each other life?

Lets make a concerted effort to get together. Treasure the time. Because 5years, 10 years down the road, we wont remember what we study. We wont remember what things we do. But we will remember the friends we make here, and the fun we have together.

Kaleos, kronus, kaja.
Friends.

Sincerely,
Alric Y
